This Wellness Wednesday I’m talking about the surprising health benefits of pumpkin. I’m also sharing an incredibly easy Pumpkin Spice Ball recipe via  theweirdough

Ladies and gents, Pumpkin isn’t for the fall anymore! And because health and wellness is part of my psoriasis journey, I’ve also included three health benefits of pumpkin.

  1. Sleep Better
Pumpkin seeds are rich in tryptophan, the amino acid that contributes to sleepiness. Tryptophan is also responsible for helping the body make serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter that helps you relax and unwind. Not only do pumpkin seeds promote better sleep, the serotonin will improve your mood, says Virgin.
  2. Pumpkin is one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. “Consuming foods rich in beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, offer protection against asthma and heart disease, and delay aging and body degeneration.” Because those of us with psoriasis are at a higher risk of developing comorbities like cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure, adding pumpkin to your diet is an easy way to combat that.
  3. Pumpkins can help protect the skin: “The same free-radical-neutralizing powers of the carotenoids in pumpkin that may keep cancer cells at bay can also help keep the skin wrinkle-free, Health magazine reported.”
